Former President General (R) Pervez Musharraf died after long illness in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Pervez Musharraf is a former President of Pakistan who served from 2001 to 2008. He was born on 11 August 1943 in Delhi, India. He was the 12th President of Pakistan.
Musharraf was educated at the Forman Christian College in Lahore and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. He joined the Pakistan Army in 1964 and rose to the rank of General in 1998. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in October 1998 and led the successful Kargil operation against India in 1999.
In October 1999, Musharraf took over as the Chief Executive of Pakistan and in June 2001, he was elected President of Pakistan. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms in the country, including the National Finance Commission Award, the National Reconstruction Bureau, the National Education Policy, and the National Health Policy. He also initiated the Pakistan-India peace process and signed the Islamabad Declaration in 2004.
Musharraf also faced criticism for his handling of the 2007 Red Mosque crisis and the 2007 Pakistani state of emergency. In August 2008 he resigned from the office of President and went into self-imposed exile in London.
In 2013, Musharraf returned to Pakistan and was arrested and charged with treason. He was released on bail in 2016 and is currently living in Dubai. He has written several books, including In the Line of Fire.
